Now it’s time to think about the other elements that make up the room. Whether you go for tiles or wood or concrete for the floors, a wood worktop or sleek taps, these elements will all help define the final look.

Taps
Taps go hand in hand with choosing a sink. Decide between separate hot-and-cold valves or a single lever. A hose attachment is useful for washing up without spraying water. Cubit sink, around £667; Robo tap, around £249.46, both Caple.

Walls
The wall adjacent to the worktop needs to be waterproof. Tiles are a classic choice, while glass, acrylic and stainless steel are contemporary. For a unique look, Glassology paints the back of sheets of glass to add pattern and colour. Elsewhere, use a paint formulated to withstand moisture.

Floors
The kitchen floor needs to be non-slip and stain resistant. Ceramic and stone tiles work in every scheme (consider undertile heating), but may be tiring to stand on for long lengths of time. Try vinyl or rubber, or a wood finish suitable for kitchens. St Pierre limestone tiles, Mandarin Stone.

Worktops
Laminated fibreboard worktops are making a comeback and some look great. Solid wood is timeless, while stainless steel looks modern and has great heat resistance, as does granite, although this is an expensive choice. Granite worktop (30mm thick), around £350 per sq m, Touchstone Interiors.

Sinks
Ideally, you need two sinks and a drainer. Sinks are undermounted (none of the sink is visible on the worktop), inset (the traditional type) or sit on (retro-styled butler’s sink). Choose stainless steel or a modern ceramic sink. Bistro sink from the Studio Collection, around £460, Astracast.
