Ask yourself this: can your kitchen include the odd piece of very versatile furniture that can be either moved, changed into something else or re-housed in the future in another room. It might be a storage unit on wheels that can be pushed to one side when not in use; it might be a dresser that can be used to store china now, but that will look good in a bedroom should you move house... The key to a smaller-than-you'd-like kitchen is to invest in clever pieces and cunning ideas - and you needn't look for them in kitchen shops, either, so use your imagination!

Hi, a kitchen designer told me that it is not possible to put a oven next to any appliance (dishwasher or washing machine)unless they are one cupboard apart from each other for health and safety reasons. Another kitchen designer told me that it was possible if housing was planned for the oven and appliance. I have seen this layout in newly fitted kitchens, even in one kitchen in this evening's Location Location Location programme (oven and hob next to the washing machine). Who should I believe? thanks for your advice, Loic
