6. Garlic
6. Garlic (Image 6 of 6)
Matthew says: 'Garlic, but in a way you might not have seen grown before. Bulbs from the supermarket can be quite dry, but you can work miracles with them.. Take a bulb, split it up into cloves, take a small pot about 9cm in diameter, fill it with compost and then put cloves around the edge of the pot, with the tops slightly proud of the compost. Put it on a windowsill, keep it moist, and the cloves will send up a shoot. This will rehydrate each of the cloves so that it is juicy, plump and full of flavour. Then, you can just take them out when you're ready to use them. Cut off the shoot and use it as you would a chive, and use the clove in your cooking. You'll never have a dry bulb, and you'll have turned your dry old garlic bulb into fresh, juicy garlic.'
