2. Potatoes
2. Potatoes (Image 2 of 6)
Matthew says: 'Potatoes are fantastic in containers - you can grow them in terracotta or in a half barrel or in a plastic compost bag. The best are salad potatoes. Start with chitted or seed potatoes that are ready to produce new ones. You can get these from garden centres or by mail order. Varieties like Charlotte, Anya or Pink Fir Apple, which is a knobbly looking beast more like a ginger root. Put it in compost in the bottom quarter of a container, then fill it over with more compost. Depending on the weather, you'll get a crop in eight to 10 weeks. The great advantage about growing in containers is that because they're out of the ground, they warm up more quickly than garden soil will, and have no problems with water-logging. When you've had the first crop, keep one of the potatoes and start all over again immediately. After eight to 10 weeks, you'll get another crop. You might get three crops a year from one pot - and in pots you'll get just the right amount at any one time.'
