It may seem a trial if you haven’t done it since school, but a plan is the secret to a successful border - and the garden as a whole. It doesn’t have to be a mathematical marvel, but you will need to measure your border (or decide on its size) then reproduce the shape on paper, and choose a scale. Draw in your plants to scale using the size they’ll grow to ultimately. Use pencil and you can change your plan around until you’re happy with the arrangement.
