Planting a border is easy – just fill your trolley at the garden centre, and put those plants in. Creating a great border takes a little more effort. It’s fun, though, and it’ll pay off in year-round shape and interest: much better than a one-hit wonder.

Our top tip? Might sound overly conscientious to a non-gardener, but if you make a note of what you’ve planted as you plant it (with a description and whatever the plant’s label suggests as plant care), it will help you, say, a season or two later, when it comes to pruning, feeding or dividing plants. Failing that, simply keep the plant’s labels handy in the drawer or in the shed for quick reference.

I am currently working with a friend who is building a home in Southeast Asia. Books on local flora are few and far between, at least in English! Can anyone recommend a website that will suggest appropriate flowering plants by region? For the life of me I can't seem to find one, though it seems like something someone must have done somewhere.... Thanks
