4. For Courtyard & Patio Gardens: The Malus Red Jade (Image 4 of 5)
Matthew says: 'Crab apples are great - and the Malus Red Jade is great for a really small garden. You get lots of seasons of interest with them; the blossom is pink and the flowers open to white, so you get a lovely mixture of white and pink. Bees love it - and bees are in trouble, so anything they love is good - they pollinate the blossom so that in summer, crabs start to ripen. They are like miniature red apples, and they festoon the tree so that it looks like it's covered with them. It looks incredible, and has a lovely weeping shape. You can leave the crab apples on the tree as a feast for birds or let them drop onto the ground for small animals. Best of all, the tree is small enough to grow in a big pot.'
