Matthew says: 'Most people are familiar with the silver birch - but the Betula utilis jacquemontii (also known as the West Himalayan birch tree) has the most extraordinary pure white bark. It also has a very light leaf - smallish and light green - and its canopy is quite thin, so it casts a lovely light with a dappled shade. In autumn, the leaves turn butter yellow, then when they've fallen, you're left with a chalk white bark, illuminated by the low winter sun. In January or February, if you see one like that, you can't fail to notice how incredibly beautiful it is.'
