For Small Gardens: The Snowy Mespilus
Matthew says: 'Also known as the Snowy Mespilus, its botanical name is Amelanchier canadensis. This is a tree that's got everything. It's a size that's described as a big shrub or a small tree, growing to about 3m tall. It has a beautiful white blossom with starry like white flowers, so thick you can't see the tree's branches for blossom. Then, when the blossom dies off, the leaves come, and it has the most beautiful foliage - pink bronze leaves that get bigger then turn green. By June the flowers have become berries, about a size of a raisin, that gradually ripen to red. Birds love them. In autumn, the lovely foliage goes orange, then red and yellow to give you a beautiful display of colour.'
