6. A Tree
6. A Tree (Image 6 of 6)
Matthew says: 'There isn't one in my garden currently, but there will be in my next one and the one after, and that's a tree - any tree - it doesn't matter what type. This country has fewer trees than any countries in the rest of Europe. They are such fantastic things. When you plant one, you're nurturing something that's going to go on for hundreds of years. It can provide fruit, a nesting place for birds and a place for squirrels to build their drays, somewhere for us to sit under and enjoy the shade. It also takes carbon and pollution out of the atmosphere, and puts oxygen back in. People are scared of planting trees -whether because of subsidence or because they are worried they will grow too big. But there are trees for every garden - even small ones. You just need to do some research. I think 65% of people in Britain have a garden - let's say that's 20 million gardens at a guess. Imagine if everyone planted one tomorrow in their garden. It would make such a big difference.'
