2. My Dad's Secateurs
2. My Dad's Secateurs (Image 2 of 6)
Matthew says: 'My dad used his secateurs for a long time, and I inherited them when he died. It's a nice connection to carry on gardening with something that he used to garden with. I grew up on a nursery - my parents grew cut flowers - and I have memories from a young age of going to Covent Garden to get flowers with my parents. Later, my dad was head gardener on a privately owned estate. I was working as a journalist, but during the last recession, the work just dried up. I went and did some work for my dad, and he said, 'You're quite good at this, ever thought of taking it up?' So, I was sort of sucked into gardening. It's in my blood; I've always loved being outdoors - if I work in an office, I feel like I've got a form of claustrophobia!'
