Lighting your garden is just as important as lighting the inside of your home – and the effects can be both practical and decorative. But which type of lighting to choose? Here, we guide you through the maze.

This can be a good way of defining the edge of deck or patio or for highlighting the different zones of your garden. Choose from spotlights sunk into the decking itself or small directional spots that highlight particular plants at its edges. Or, go for decorative posts that will guide you along a pathway.

These can be used to create dramatic effects when placed around trees or shrubs – or even pieces of garden sculpture. To uplight a tree, go for a narrow 12 or 24 degree beam angle for the most dramatic effect and hide the lights within low-growing plants. For even light, say for a patio, fit lights with a wide-angled beam.
You can buy all sorts of decorative garden lighting, from lighting chains (like those you’d have on a Christmas tree, but designed for outdoor, all year round use) to lanterns. Use these to best effect in an area you spend time sitting in – perhaps a dining or seating area.
