The plants you add around your patio and on it will make it feel like part of the garden, and provide a soft contrast to the hard landscaping you’ve used.

Think about building raised beds around the patio so that you can plant a colourful display of flowers that can be appreciated at eye level when you’re sitting at a table. An area of trellis where you can grow fragrant climbers will give your patio ‘walls’, adding privacy and another dimension to the planting.
Pots are a patio essential. Create groups of three or five pots of different scale unless you’re after a very formal effect, when you’d opt for symmetrical pairs. Annual bedding plants are a simple and widely available option, but don’t forget the less obvious choices such as herbs – fragrant and handy for barbecues – or architectural plants like the spiky cordyline to create different effects.
