The plants you use will make your deck part of your garden.

You need to plant around the edges of a deck - or put in pot plants if beds aren't possible - to soften its edges. For best effect, choose plants that complement those in the rest of the garden, and use them to create a pretty view, screen an ugly view or to simply create a dividing line between the deck and, say, the lawn.
A raised deck at the back of the house will look best with plants and planters that match its scale. Small trees and palms grown in super-sized containers are good choices for a deck on a generous scale.
Making a trellis or pergola part of your deck gives you a great opportunity to grow climbers that’ll soften the straight lines of the structure.
A deck that incorporates areas of planting is another way to create a seamless feel in your garden. On a small scale, if you’re using decking squares, leave one out every so often to create a mini bed.
For a bigger deck, think about interrupting areas of deck with beds. Grasses and shapely shrubs that’ll overhang it will look fabulous, and areas of bold flowers create punctuation points of colour.
