Decks can be constructed from suitable timber or purpose-made decking squares if you’re opting for a modest patio-style area.

The timber used for decking should either be classed as a hardwood that’s ‘durable’ or ‘very durable’ or softwood that’s been pressure-treated with wood preservative.
Smooth, grooved or ribbed boards are available. Grooved versions are designed to drain water away more quickly, and you may prefer the appearance of one type over another. There are boards available that have non-slip material inserts that can be used on stairs.
Over time, your deck will change colour as the timber is exposed to the weather. This produces a natural finish, but if you don’t want this, you can treat it with a clear water-repellant coating, or you can stain it. Choose from natural wood stains, or go for a coloured finish that’ll blend in with your planting.
