These are the most monstrous of the beautiful bromeliad family, with their large, patterned leaves or spiky, multi-coloured flowers. Busy boys will love the “maximum effect for little effort” quality of these plants, which continue to look beautiful, in return for water every so often. Their leaves spiral in a way that means they can trap water at the base of the plant when they grow wild in the jungle, so ensure this natural well is topped up every month; and keep it somewhere bright but not too sunny.
