Like many urban gardens, this one is L-shaped, which means not only is the side return often too small to do anything meaningful with, but also that the view from within the house into the side return is often quite bland (or of the neighbouring house). This design combats these problems firstly with a white painted wall. The wall reflects light back into the house, provides privacy and a backdrop for the architectural planting in front. Also, the shallow nature of the border in front of the wall means that the side return is uncluttered and therefore spacious enough to provide a sheltered seating area or place for children to play.

Hi I have a smallish garden, which I would like to improve so we can use it this summer possibly have barbacue. At the moment is is a mess, old paving in the midlle and earth on both sides of approx 3ft in depth, I own 3 cats and it seems cats come from all over to do go to toilet in my garden. I would like to have a very low maintenance garden with no earth, paving all over and possibly plants in lovely colourful pots or climbers. please can suggest something which would create a pleasant enviremont for us to use on the summer and which would enhace the beauty of my home. Thanks

having 4 dogs we have paved and decked our garden we have blocked off swimming pool so they cannot get on decking had our house valued they said garden really let the house down what can i plant that the dogs will not destroy really need to do something looks like a cocrete jungle
