If yours is a family - or large - garden, it's likely you'll have trouble keeping up with the maintenance. So, work all the tricks of the trade into the garden at design stage. Edging your borders will save you having to continually neaten them with shears or trimmers. Mulching them won't just keep them looking tidy - mulch will protect your plants from the sun and cold, and help the soil retain moisture. Mulch will also inhibit weeds, if laid over the top of a weed-resistant barrier, which you can buy in rolls or sheets from garden centres. Less work all round - we love it.
