Consider the position of the bed before arranging other furniture. Although the size of the room may mean that you don’t have any choice where it goes, avoid placing it direct sunlight, which could disturb you on sunny mornings. And allow as much space as possible either side of the bed - ideally 75cm upwards - so you can get in and out comfortably, making sure any storage drawers can open out properly. However small the room, don’t be tempted to push the bed right up against the wall – this isn’t a good look and is immensely impractical if two of you share. Less furniture is better for a streamlined look, so adopt some clever storage solutions to keep the room clutter-free.
Go for dual purpose furniture incorporating storage. As well as the ideas we’ve already mentioned, look out for storage stools and ottomans which sit at the end of the bed and double up as tables.

If you don’t have room for a dressing table, choose a slimline console table instead, or fit a narrow shelf at table height – possibly above a radiator – and place a mirror over it. And choose wardrobes with sliding rather than hinged doors which need minimal clearance in front.
