With space at a premium in most homes, good storage is vital. This is especially important in a bedroom as the less clutter you see, the more relaxing the room. There are lots of imaginative ways to store your clothes, accessories or spare linen.
Open Hanging
The cheapest solution is to use an open hanging system of rails and baskets. However, it will look messy unless your clothes co-ordinate with your colour scheme and you keep them very tidy.
Fitted Wardrobes
Fitted wardrobes are efficient, as they utilise every millimetre of available space, so they're a must in a smaller bedroom, and they add value to your house. Look at your clothes and assess how much storage space you need, and then double it. Usually women need twice as much as men. Solid doors on fitted wardrobes hide clothes and clutter. Blend them in by painting them, or use mirrors on the doors. The room will look instantly bigger and they'll be useful too. Frosted glass doors also reflect light and brighten a room but they're not as concealing. Use any alcoves and, if you have to position your wardrobes opposite the door, you may need to step them.
Flat Pack
You can buy flat-pack systems from DIY and furniture shops, and you can always make them individual by changing the handles or adding decoration.
Whichever choice you make, ensure your system also has shelves, drawers or baskets in various sizes to accommodate your items such as underwear, socks, shoes and hats. If you have lots of space, or want to be able to move things around consider freestanding furniture. It can enhance architectural features and make use of small nooks and limited wall space.
There are beautiful crafted pieces available, designed with a place for every conceivable item. But they're expensive.
