It's obvious, but in design terms it is worth repeating: just because you're in your bedroom doesn't mean you're going to sleep.
When approaching the multi-role bedroom as a comfort food cafe, TV room, hobby room, exercise space and a place to sulk, careful planning is required to enable it to best cope with the demand placed upon it.
There are several looks you can aim for in a bedroom, from the most feminine floral, to stark and masculine simplicity. You can choose an ethnic theme, hark back to a bygone era or go for a high-tech, electronic retreat. Whatever your taste, your bedroom should be a place to shut the door on the outside world and relax. Whatever your chosen style, there are six key design points you must consider in a bedroom.
Planning
The layout needs to be efficient and aesthetically pleasing. What most people really seem to want, when thinking about remodelling their bedrooms, is a retreat. They just want somewhere that they can go to, shut the door, sit down or lie in bed and just generally enjoy a space that's calm and soft. And if you're a couple it should be romantic and even saucy as well... The first thing to decide is where to put the bed. This depends on the shape of the room and where the windows are. The bed head should be placed against a wall, allowing for access from both sides.
You may want to be able to see the sky, trees or any view out of the window but in this case you may also need a curtain. In an awkwardly shaped room, with slopes or curves, you should adapt your bed head to the wall for a perfect fit.
Next you need to plan where to put your storage units. The shape of your room will dictate this. Ensure that wardrobe doors and drawers can be opened without hitting the bed.
Every room needs a focal point to draw your eye, or else it will feel disconcerting. In a bedroom it is usually the bed, but it could be a fireplace if you have one, a picture or a piece of furniture like a chair or chaise longue.
All of these things need to be planned before you go any further.
