Glass basins work well where space is restricted because they're much less obtrusive. However, you'll need to invest in plenty of limescale cleaning products in hardwater areas.
If your basin has to be behind the door, pick a round one. Square edges will dent your door.
On limited budgets, look for ex-display items in plumbers' merchants and showrooms.
Tap Tips
- Investing in beautiful taps can enable you to update your existing bathroom cheaply or to get away with the plainest of other fittings in a complete revamp.
- Mixer taps are available in a huge range of styles, they allow you to regulate water temperature, so make a good choice for families. On basins, make sure the head swivels, or you'll bash your nose when you wash your face. The government is currently creating legislation to oblige all new homes to feature water temperature taming
- Separate taps come in traditional and modern styles. They're designed to fill a basin rather than to be used with the water running, so are more economical. But there's a danger of scalding fingers under a running hot tap.
- Reclaimed taps are usually Victorian, so are good for the 'shabby chic' look. Check they've been overhauled, as they're more likely to leak. They need regular polishing or a coat of varnish to avoid tarnishing.
- Sensor operated taps come on when you place you hand underneath and stop after a set time. They prevent water wastage and drips. But they make your bathroom feel like a public convenience and style wise they only work in an ultra modern bathroom.
