Is It The Right Size?

Measure up before you go shopping. It's not just length you have to worry about - ensure the sideboard is not too deep or causes an obstruction, and if there's shelving above the area, leave plenty of room underneath.

Is It Heat Resistant?

If your sideboard is going to double up as a serving surface, make sure that it's heat resistant, or at least get some protective mats, a trivet or even a glass top.

Find A Show Piece

A sideboard can be a great show piece, especially if you commission a piece from a furniture designer. It needn't be more expensive than buying off the shelf at midmarket level and it will suit your exact requirements. If you want to go down the bespoke route, try one of Sarah Kay's fab designs (www.kay-stemmer.com). Or, hit a store such as Ikea for something more affordable but seriously stylish.

Show Off Or Hide Away?

Sideboards with doors and drawers will look nice and neat, but if you want to show off your best crockery, you should go for one with open shelves or a glass front.
