Destructive to metal, rust can also leave a bad stain on fabrics unless dealt with sharpish.

From carpets: Apply a paste of water and bicarbonate of soda to the rust, leave to penetrate for a couple of hours, then clean with carpet shampoo.

Rusty Floor. How To Remove Rust

From clothing: Apply a paste of lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda to the rust (test an inconspicuous area first), leave to penetrate for a couple of hours, then wash as usual.

From iron and steel: Rub down with sandpaper.

From metal bakeware: Sprinkle powdered detergent on the rust and rub with half a raw potato (yes, really).

  4. I had to post a note to say AMAZING! The metal car-port roof leaked after a torrential downpour/tornado hit over the weekend here in Al Ain, UAE. It left horrible rust marks all over the car bonnet and roof. I tried everything to get rid and then turned to Kim's and Agi's advice! It said to use detergent and potatoes. I, with trepidation and probably looking like a complete Wally, stepped out with two halves of a King Edward's. Even without the detergent, rub - pause - rub again and wipe clean! Rust marks are gone! I wish I'd taken before and after photos!

  5. To remove rust stain from bath tub, wash basin, toilet bowel etc,use phosphoric acid (you may get in hard ware stores and paint stores. It is usually sold in a brand name 'PHOSPHO' its intended use is to apply on surfaces made of iron to prevent rusting.)Take a small amount in a disposable plastic cup and apply with an old tooth brush, rubbing lightly.repeat till the stain is gone.It will not take long,Usually 5 to 10 minutes.Protect your eyes, skin.cloth etc.from spills and splashes. If get in contact with your skin wash it immediately.Same stuff may help to remove rust-stains from white clothes and carpets. But test it at a hidden area with a slightly diluted phosph. acid.
