At home in damp, dark, warm places, unchecked mildew can destroy home furnishings.

From fabrics: Normal washing should remove mildew and stains – where appropriate add some laundry bleach, or try a proprietary stain remover.

From upholstery: Take the item outside where possible and knock surface mildew off with a stiff brush. Air the item in the sun. If spots remain, dab with mild disinfectant and rinse.

To kill mildew & mould off of blinds: I know it's a hated thing to do because of what this does to you so wear goggles, a mask and gloves. Use warm water in a tub & pour some bleach in it and soak the blinds in it then brush clean with a soft cloth.

Black spots on wood furniture can indicate mildew. Don't just varnish over it, treat it with bleach first and then re-apply the finish.

Try using citric acid to clean mould and mildew off of your bathroom tiles. Much more environmentally friendly than bleach.

Clean shower curtains by washing them in your washing machine on a gentle cycle. It will clean soap scum as well as mildew. When washing is complete, just hang the shower curtain back on the rod to air dry.

Remove mildew from shower curtains by scrubbing with a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water. Then rinse in plenty of clean water.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  4. PLEASE HELP ! i have a beautiful white wool baby shawl that my mum knitted for me, (she can no longer knit due to her M.S) ! i had the shawl stored away in a basket in a cupboard but unfortunatley the water tank above had leaked and there is now some horrible rust marks on the shawl ! can anyone tell me if there is a way of removing these stains safely without damaging the wool ? i have used this shawl for all my children coming home from the hospital etc and as i am expecting another in 6 weeks would really love to carry on the tradition ! i have read that you can use lemon juice, salt and bicarb of soda, but not sure if any of these will affect the wool ? i have taken the shawl to the dry cleaners but they will not touch it ? any help is greatly appreceated !

  9. This is a plea for help. I have up to 12 symptoms of mould allergy (no longer visible. I need to test the air urgently, but everything I have found on internet is very very expensive. I am probably suffering so badly because I do have lowered immunity due to ongoing chemotherapy treatment - which also means I have a very low income. Is there a product to test the air and surfaces in my bedroom? Or an environmental org which can help me? without this info, I cannot know what help I need and who from. I am being treated individually by my GP for the symptoms, but only just connected them all with this idea. I recover significantly if I sleep on the sofa! Amongst other suspects, there was or is a water leaking problem from the roof-gutter to the ground, and in the wall cavity between them. The internal wall was cleaned a while ago. Cleaning everything (except pillows and duvets) has helped considerably but it is still affecting me! Thank you, and please re-direct to the correct part of site, Penny

  10. I left a gift bag on the kitchen work top, it left a pink stain which wouldnt come off. The closest thing I had to bleach was Duck toilet cleaner so I used that but its just left a big blue stain. Any tips on how I can get rid of this stain would be greatly appreciated.

  11. They don't mention that professional dry cleaning is probably best on delicate and natural fabrics (silk, leather etc). Some books recommend rubbing with salt and lemon juice and then hanging the item in the sun (for the UV) - but I've not tried this, and the lemon juice and sunlight are likely to bleach.

  12. I have mildew on two pairs of curtains because they've been getting wet from the condensation. I can't wash them in the machine because I tried that before and it will shrink them. I can't really afford to have them dry cleaned. Any tips would be much appreciated.

My buggy has been in the shed all winter i don't know if that will make it harder to get the mildew off. I hope someone can help me. Thanks

We saw the programe with Aggie & Kim in which they used a mix of tea-tree oil and something else which we cant recall - does anybody eout there know what the other ingredient was? or had any success with this?
