Keep wood looking good – for good!

Every week: Sweep or vacuum with a hard-floor attachment as often as you can stand.

Sealed floors: Wood that has been sealed can be mopped, but wring the mop out really well as too much water can make the wood swell (that’s ‘swell’ in a bad way...). Resist the temptation to polish up the floor unless you’re trying to break someone’s leg.

Unsealed floors: If your floor has a waxed rather than varnished finish, damp mop sparingly.

You can apply more wax polish to improve the colour of the wood, but little and not often. Over time the wax may build up and get a bit grubby, in which case you could strip it back and start again. A cloth moistened with white spirit will lift the old wax – wipe away the residue with crumpled newspaper. Mop the floor, then re-apply new wax.

If you’re mopping the kitchen floor, use the kitchen bin to hold the soapy water and you’ll end up with a nice clean bin too.

  1. just had new oiled solid oak floor laid and dirty black water from the radiator has been spilt on it and stained quite badly. any sugestions as to how i can safely remove it. tried white spirit but no joy. there has also been eggshell gloss paint carried across it by my adorable but nearly homeless collie dog, any ideas on that one.

  2. Hi. I recently moved into a council house to find that previous occupiers' pets have urinated on the stairs, possibly repeatedly, and some time ago. The occupiers simply carpeted over the floorboards. Having removed the filthy carpet, I now can't get rid of the smell from the wooden floorboards. Is there any way to get the smell out other than simply sealing it in with varnish?

  4. We just moved into a house where the gaps between wooden floor boards are filled with a horrendous combination of fuss, dirt and God knows what else. I'm worried about dust mites, as I'm sure there are plenty. I got down and scraped the gaps and hoovered as much stuff that came out. However, I would like to know if there is anything that I can apply to get rid of the stuff left behind plus any dust mite eggs? Thanks very much in advance for your help, Veronica

  9. HELP.. I have an unfinished wood floor that is very rough and dirty! You had some kind of soap detergent that you cleaned flooring with on a program I once viewed. One of two programs that I have had the privilege of seeing. We do not have tv. You scrubbed it with a brush, lots of elbow grease and some type of soap... I can provide 2 of the 3 things needed. What cleaner did you use??? I have precious grandbabies and would like to know that it is cleaner. Mopping just doesnt really clean it. Large spaces between the boards, uneven surface, no finish, old linseed oil finish of sorts on some surfaces... Thank you in advance for your time and advice. God Bless You All

  10. I hope you will be able to help me. I have a varnished wooden floor which has had masking tape on it (to mark out the size of a rug). The tape was down for a long time. I have removed the tape but it has left a 'line of tackiness' on the floor. Do you have any ideas how this can be removed without damaging the floor? We are talking about a very large area. I look forward to hearing from you.
