They take a lot of abuse – so do something about your dirty pillows.

Invest in a protective cover for your pillows to shield them from the inevitable dribble and stains.

Pillow on Bed. How To Clean Pillows.

Machine wash pillows on a gentle cycle, using laundry detergent but not fabric softener. Check the care label, first. Tumble dry pillows on a low-heat setting – a couple of tennis balls in the drum with them will prevent the feathers from clumping, but check they are colourfast first. Put pillows in an airing cupboard or similar for a day or two to ensure the filling is totally dry before putting back on your bed. If you don’t have a dryer, peg pillows on the washing line.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  1. Please tell me how to clean my sofa bed. I accidentally dropped an olive(soaked in oil) on my white sofa bed. We tried cleaning it with water and soap, but the stain is still there. Help. Thank you

  3. Having a B&B (Bank Villa in Masham) I have to be really on the ball with cleaning. Did you know you can get duvet protectors as well as matress and pillow protectors! Go to www.outofeden.co.uk to get them. I also have a steam cleaner, which was expensive but great on matresses and showers and floors and windows... OK so I am cleaning mad, my hubbie keeps moving incase he gets steam cleaned or popped in the washing machine.!

  4. When you put pillows in the washing machine (that aren't feather particularly), use a safety pin for each corner to stop the contents of the pillow moving around and deforming. My mother swears by it - and I do now too.

  5. The reason you should tumble dry your pillows with tennis balls is so that they dry properly & mildew can't set in. The balls break up the wet clumps and allow air to flow through. If you can't tumble dry, you need to line dry and really beat the pillows to break up the clumps. Or go to the launderette.

  6. I put feather pillows in the washing mashine but they've ended up smelling a bit musty and damp. Does anyone know a way around this? I don't have a tumble drier.
