Tackle the oven regularly and it needn’t become your shameful secret!

Every day: It’s hard to imagine having the discipline to wipe out the oven after every use, but deep down you know it makes sense – just think about never having to do a huge oven blitz again.

Cleaning a dirty oven requires either natural materials and elbow grease or a pretty scary chemical attack.

Oven. How To Clean An Oven.

The non-caustic method calls for, you guessed it, bicarbonate of soda, mixed to a thick paste and smeared all over the inside of the oven. Leave overnight then brace yourself for some serious scrubbing with water and a scourer.

The caustic method requires less graft but more prep. You need a solution of ammonia bleach and water, a respiratory face mask, thick rubber gloves, protective clothes and the surrounding area needs to be well protected, too. Take the oven shelves outside, spray them with your solution and seal them into a bin bag. Spray the oven with the bleach. After a couple of hours, hose down the racks (keeping away from plants, pets, neighbours etc) then wash them in warm soapy water. Rinse out the oven with plenty of clean water. Pregnant women and asthmatics should avoid this like the plague, and keep children and pets well out of it, too.

If you've got a really disgusting oven that you just can't get clean or can't face cleaning, get someone else to do it! My friend raves about Ovenu - she said it got her oven back to new. Not tried it yet but her enthusiasm for it has certainly convinced me!

To make short work of cleaning your oven shelfs put them in the dishwasher on a hot wash. They will easily clean off with little effort.

Cookers- when your stainless steel in the oven are brown with brunt on food, place them in a bath of hot water with a sprinkle of washing powder and leave over night - the next day the dirt will slide off when you wash them and also removes any stains in your bath it kills two birds with one stone.

When cleaning ur oven. Make a paste of 1 cup og white washing powder and just under 1 cup white vinegar. Heat ur oven to 180 for about five minutes. Turn the oven off cover the inside in the paste, leave for 1 hour and all the gunk should come off. U may need to use a spatula to get the worse off but it does really work!!!! Saved me hours of scrubbing!!!!

Make your own oven cleaner from one tablespoon of bicarbonate soda mixed with a good cup of hot water. Wipe the whole oven, including the glass door and shelves and the stain will gradually disappear.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  10. Hello, I have a problem with my lounge carpet. Unfortunately, my front door opens onto the street, so when opening the front door the first encounter is my carpet. I have tried all kind of solutions. For example, Bi carbonate of soda, washing up liquid. Nothing has worked. I think the offending marks are oil or tar. I can't think it can be anything else. Please help, thanks

  14. I am moving into a house & the bottom of the toilet is disgusting, what would be best to use to clean it? Posted by colin on 03/09/2009 21:37:27 I haven't tried them myself but you can buy from lakeland.co.uk Astonish toilet cleaning tabs which received all positive comments. Somebody asked about the deep fat frier, I used Ovenmate also from Lakeland which as the name suggests if for the oven but you can also use it on grill pans, bbq and deep fat frier. It's a gel that you just have to paint on and leave for a while and wipe off. No scrubbing required, it's absolutely brilliant.

  26. I'm going to do my oven tonight but I just did my microwave by putting two lemon slices and an orange slice (after squeezing some juice from them into the water) and nuking it for 10mins (saw this on the show yesterday) my microwave was not BAD but did need a clean and it did all just wipe off with a bit of elbow grease and I was actually shocked at how much grime came off!! Great tip Ladies :)

  30. The main article mentions ammonia bleach. What exactly is this meant to be? I'm advised that mixing normal household bleach and ammonia can result in very toxic fumes of chlorine gas.

  33. I have a stove that's gas top and convection bottom. Oil/grease spilled over and covered the bottom of the oven (now hardened/stained). How do I get it all off? The stove manual says not to use "oven cleaners" and I'm afraid to turn the self-cleaning mode on for fear of fire. How can I clean it?
