Don’t let a limescale-clogged reservoir or tacky soleplate make ironing even more of a chore than it is already.

Woman Ironing. How To Clean An Iron

Remove limescale by filling the reservoir with a solution of clear vinegar and water. Leave for an hour or two, then empty and rinse out with clean water. Check the manufacturer’s instructions carefully first however, as this could damage some self-cleaning irons.

Clean the soleplate by wiping and polishing with a soft cloth (when the iron is cool, natch). Remove burnt-on sticky marks by rubbing them with a damp cloth when the iron is warm. More stubborn marks should be taken in hand with white toothpaste or bicarbonate of soda.

Remove scorch marks from an iron by rubbing it with a warmed-up solution of equal parts white distilled vinegar and salt. If that doesn’t work, use a cloth dampened with full-strength white distilled vinegar.

Clean your iron by sprinkling salt on a sheet of waxed paper or newspaper and sliding the iron across it.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  1. I think your programme is one of the best programmes I have seen for years, but surely people do not let their houses get into the state that is shown on tv, the mind boggles. The hints and methods are far far cheaper then the branded names that is in the shops. Please please keep the programme running.
