It’s a dirty job but someone’s got to do it.

Every day: We don’t need to go into detail about why good hygiene is necessary in this particular area – suffice to say that regular cleaning will make the whole job slightly less icky.

Choose your tools: Toilet brushes keep the bowl at arm’s length if you are squeamish but are a haven for germs, so after use the brush and the container need to be thoroughly soaked in a bleach solution and left to dry before putting back in the room. Alternatively, hold your breath and clean the bowl with a cloth, which you can just chuck away.

Toilet. How To Clean A Toilet

Every week: Pour a suitable toilet cleaner into the bowl, leave for a few minutes then scrub, getting into the seat hinges and under the rim. Flush, make sure any cleaning product is rinsed away, then flush again.

Don’t forget the seat and handle – warm soapy water should be enough to tackle dirt and germs.

If limescale is really stubborn, you may have to part empty the toilet bowl (use and old cup), then use a proprietary limescale remover, before refilling the toilet bowl.

I regularly drop a milton tablet in to my toilet bowels to keep them free from lime scale. We have very soft water where we live and tent to get a pink residue around where the water comes out of the holes and sinks upstairs , by using a little bit of bleach this illuminates the stain and leaves the toilet sparkling.

I slip a few denture tablets in the toilet daily then just a swoosh of the brush and it is easier for the weekly scrub.

I found the best way to clean a dirty toilet is to use 5 teaspoons of baking soda mixed with boiling water. If you leave this in the toilet overnight the dirt should just fall off the next day. For an even nicer odour use the zest of a lemon as well.

To reduce limescale in your toilet put half a lemon in your cistern.

OK, if you've ever dropped a penny in a glass of coke you'll know how well it cleans it. Why not use coke for more everyday cleaning? I bet it's great at shifting toilet stains...

If you need to clean a really grubby toilet then try using damp sandpaper on tough grimy rings.

Always make sure that you put bleach in your toilet brush holder when cleaning your toilet.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  1. Our upstairs toilet, which is pretty new, has developed a few thin black vertical lines in the bowl. I've tried pumice, SOS, Mr. Clean Eraser, and several toilet cleaners, which only lighten the lines. Do you have other ideas, please?

  5. I find just bleaching it every day and giving it a scrub with the toilet brush daily will kill any germs and keep it looking clean and smelling fresh.

  8. try lining the toilet with toilet paper and then soaking with vinegar to remove limescale. If it's really bad leave it overnight & empty out the water first as well. I used to do this every week, never used any other cleaners and had a sparkling loo in a very busy house. I think that this might be the advice some of you are looking for (limescale). Might not work in one go, but over time it should do the trick. You could try scrubbing a little with a scourer or pumice after the soak as well.

  11. To clean lipstick from a door spray hairspray on the damaged area, then a cloth to wipe it clean then another clean warm wet cloth to take the stickiness off the door. Then wipe down with kitchen towel.

  16. I drop a clorox cleaning tablet into the back of my tank and this helps keep it clean and sanitized between cleanings. A pumice stone works wonders for hard or soft water build up.

  17. To remove water from the toilet bowl, you can push it through the u-bend with the toilet brush. This is much less unpleasant than using a cup to empty it out.

  19. I have to say, I really enjoy watching your show. I have learned a great deal of home remedies ideas to use around my home and my mothers. I really appreciate what you both do an the explaining on each subject. I try to watch all your episodes, but when I miss I come to your web site and check for any new ideas. My mom has a really dusty home and I go there and clean for her once a week or at least dust. So again thank you for all your tips.

  24. I find cleaning the toilet easier by spraying disinfectant then wiping away with paper towels then throwing them away, it stops the germs spreading through a cloth.

  25. Clean toilet and toilet floor with pure soap in very hot water; suds up bowl toilet seat and base of toilet with cloth or brush; then pour hot water over and in toilet; spray with pure vinegar (vinegar's ph index is to alkaline to allow bacteria to survive) wipe over with cloth or toilet paper, clean and shiny then mop floor don't forget toilet door handle spray with vinegar and wipe; for interim clean bleach in toilet bowl at nite let sit onite and flush first thing. I rarely need bleach. pure soap and hot water leaves toilet fresh.
