Used 74 times each day (probably) your sink sees a lot of action!

Every day: Wipe down the sink before and after each use. Yes, really.

Every week: Disinfect the sink by filling it with warm water and adding a capful of bleach. Slosh some water into the overflow and scrub round the overflow and plug with an old toothbrush.

Acrylic sinks should not be cleaned with abrasive cleaners, which will scratch the surface. Zap stains by soaking with a weak bleach solution.

Kitchen Sink. How To Clean A Kitchen Sink

Porcelain/ceramic sinks only need warm water and a cream cleaner to keep them fresh, or a splash of vinegar on really determined stains.

Stainless steel sinks will scratch so just say no to harsh scourers – most cream cleaners will deal with stains or rust marks, or try a bicarbonate of soda paste. Get rid of limescale using lemon juice.

I add a cap full of bleach, and a drop of dish washing liquid to hot water in my sink and soak my dishcloths over night. In the morning the cloths are clean and sanitized and the sink is sparkling and disinfected.

To keep your sink clean, after washing up, I sprinkle the surface with bicarbonate of soda and spritz with vinegar I keep in a spray bottle. I use my (clean) dish rag to scrub the surface, then rinse with hot water. Follow up with hydrogen peroxide and you increase the antibacterial punch and reduce water spots. This is environmentally friendly and works better than any commercial cleaners!

To clean a stainless steel sink: I sprinkle bicarbonate of soda all over sink and tap. Then with a tiny spritz of proprietary all-purpose cleaner with bleach. Scrub gently with a nylon scourer, then dampen micro-fibre cloth or any cloth with warm water and remove it all. Buff to a shiny dry sink. I find micro-fibre clothes in the automotive department of any discount retail shop. I love you Kim and Aggie. Stevie in the States (Seattle).

To shine stainless steel sinks generously sprinkle either table salt or baking soda into the sink then use the cut end of half a fresh lemon as a scrubby-pad. Rinse with hot water and the sink will gleam!

When you want to clean the sink of tea stains and make it look like new just sprinkle some washing powder onto the sink and rub in. The sink will come up looking like new. Or better still why not take out your drawer from the washing machine and use the powder from this when you soak it in the sink.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  1. Sarah, I too am allergic to fragrance and have sensitive skin. I use MUM unperfumed roll-on deodourant and have never had any reaction to it. Most chemists sell them but not all so I usually buy 2 or 3 when I see them. Boots sensitive skin range are pretty good but I try to always use their sensitive skin blue wash up gloves when cleaning. Surcare sensitive washing up liquid is good and mild and not too pricey and can be used for cleaning most things.

  2. Kim & Aggie ~ you have made my life so much simpler (and cheaper)!!! I am a publican, with a commercial kitchen. I do all the cleaning myself!! Your tips are fabulous; I used to spend FORTUNES on products.... now its lemons, bicarb, vinegar, salt, toothpowder, etc, etc! Come hell or high water I never miss the show (I actually pay someone else to work the bar, so I can watch!). MICROFIBRE CLOTHS are a boon, and what I really wanted to say was don't go paying a fortune for them ~ as much as it pains me to advertise them, Tesco actually do them in their value range ~ at just 89p (ish) for 3! Sooper Dooper! Happy Days The Dragon!!

  4. There are a lot of good powder cleaners for stainless steel sinks as well. Sprinkle the powder on and use a plastic scourer (not metal) and a little water, takes a little elbow grease but even what seems like acid type stains come of very well and leave the stainless sparkling.

  7. If you have a dishwasher, always empty the teapot or dregs from tea/coffee cups in there, and this will reduce the stains in the sink! I love Kim & Aggie too xx

  12. Our sink was awful for showing up dirt as it's white. I tried absolutely everything before I found Barkeepers Friend. Now all I do is sprinkle it in the sink, wet a cloth and wipe down. My partner even commented on it when he came home from work. Perfect!!!

  14. My dad's old trick always seems to work. Pour a whole small bottle of normal fairy liquid in the plugged drain. Leave it for 30 minutes and then pour several litres of boiling hot water in there. It always works for me and is far more eco-friendly and better for your pipes than soda.

  19. I have a dark grey graphite sink and I live in a hard water area so it always has limescale water marks and we pour our tea dregs down the sink which merges with the limescale. Can anyone suggest a cleaner to remove both of these without damaging the sink surface. I have tried cream cleaners but it has not removed the limescale. The manufacturers suggested Bar Keepers Friend but this did not touch the scale. Any helpful suggestions gratefully received. Stephanie

  22. To solve - kitchen sinks smelling like rotten eggs!!! You must : first pour the entire contents of a cheap bottle of sink and drain unblocker gel (from most pound shops) and leave overnight. Then you must : Rinse the next day with boiling hot water. The next step is to use a (caustic solution) this could be Vinegar then baking or caustic soda added to the sink - After a couple of hours rinse with bleach and hot soapy water. Repeat once weekly. If problem persists use Acid Drain Cleaner that will completely dissolve all the trapped debris causing the problem further down the drain

  31. Can you advise me on how to get cooking oil splashes off the paintwork and windows on my car. I parked my car at a factory which was frying products in their industrial cookers and the oil carried in the steam deposited onto my car. I have put it through the car wash numerous times but it will not remove them. Regards John O'Conor
