Homespun remedies are all you need for a clean, hygienic chiller.

Every week: Remove fridge shelves and compartments and wash them in warm soapy water, then rinse. Wipe the inside of the fridge with a potion made up of two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda for every litre of warm water. Get into the rubber door seal with an old toothbrush and don’t forget the outside of the door and the handle – germs will have a ball here if left unchecked.

Stains inside the fridge can be rubbed with a stronger bicarbonate of soda paste or white toothpaste.

A couple of times a year: pull the appliance away from the wall and vacuum the cooling elements at the back. It will make the fridge more efficient, so you have more money to spend on filling it up.

Save money and the environment – dust the back of your fridge. While nobody can see it, the dust on the back of your fridge is making yours inefficient. The science is that the pipes on the back heat up and cool down to keep your fridge at the right temperature. Once they’re covered in dust, which is an insulator, they can’t exchange this heat as well. You’ll save money on electric bills and keep your fridge in better shape as it won’t have to work so hard.

If you’ve been putting off de-frosting the fridge for a while- don’t! It’s will make it more efficient and not nearly as bad for the environment. I always put it off as it was never empty enough, and I didn’t want to chuck away a load of good food. Then I invested in a cool bag and a couple of ice packs that live in the fridge. Now I can dump all the food in the cool bag with the ice packs, get my defrost done in two hours and everything’s still fine to put back in!

  1. Hi all. I have recently bought a second hand fridge freezer which i have covered with sticky back plastic as it had been painted and looked unsightly. I now have a problem with the door seals going mouldy. Is this because of the sticky back plastic? how do i get rid of the mould? ive tried fairy liquid and an old tooth brush. Please help!

  3. Quickly go through the fridge and dump all unusable items just before you go on your weekly shop. Then give it a quick wipe out. No hassle way to always have a clean fridge!

  4. To make a lovely room freshner, just use an empty spray bottle and fill it with a small quantity of zoflora then dilute with water and give it a shake, then you have your very own antibacterial air freshner, its also great to use on fabric sofa's and curtains, much cheaper than fabreeze and smeels great, kills odours and bacteria too x

  7. To get rid of nasty odours in your fridge, just put a few tablespoons of regular instant coffee granuals (dry) in an egg cup and leave in the corner. It seems to absorb all the nasty whiffs!

  8. I recently had to have my washing machine repaired and they tried to sell me specialist cleaning solutions to remove built up soap powder and limescale. I declined and told them I use white vinegar and bicarb. He told me 'we don't recommend you use those' - was he just trying to scare my into buying their products?

  12. If you have to clean your fridge and have frozen food but no cool bag then wrap the items in loads of newspaper and then wrap everything in a large bath towel, by the time you have cleaned the fridge the items will still be frozen. (You can do this for a couple of hours but not overnight)!
