You know it’s time to start a freezer-cleaning routine when you need an ice pick to get your peas!

When ice starts to build up, defrost the fridge or fridge freezer. Transfer the cargo to cool bags then stick a bowl of hot water inside to help the thaw. Once the ice is melted, clean out the appliance as above and restock generously.
A couple of times a year: pull the appliance away from the wall and vacuum the cooling elements at the back. It will make the freezer more efficient, so you have more money to spend on filling it up.
An easy way to clean the fridge is to put the shelves in the dishwasher. Remove the top rack of the dishwasher to accommodate the size of the shelves and run it with detergent. Put the top rack back in to wash the smaller door shelves and bins. While the shelves are out you can wipe down the interior. Works for large upright freezers too.

After defrosting a freezer that is not frost free wipe it dry and spray with a spray cooking oil so the next time you defrost it does not take as long as the ice loosens up very quick.

We had a freezer that quit working and had fish in it. When we got it working again it smelled really bad. I just put a cardboard tray with kitty litter in and left for awhile and it went away.
