Contrary to student myth, baths are NOT ‘self-cleaning’ – here’s how to avoid nasty rings.

Every day: Get in the habit of wiping down the bath after each use and limescale won’t have a chance to build up.

Plastic or acrylic baths scratch easily, so steer away from abrasive cleaners – a gentle wipe over with a mild bathroom cleaner and soft cloth should be enough.

If you find yourself faced with a mightily grubby bath, try filling it with warm water, chucking in a scoop or two of biological washing powder and leaving overnight.

Enamelled baths are slightly tougher than acrylic, but are not totally scratch proof either, so leave the scrubbing brush alone. Stains on the enamel can be treated with a paste of bicarbonate of soda mixed with a drop of water. See below for limescale treatments.

Cast-iron baths - take great care with these – always test new products on an inconspicuous area before sloshing it all over. Avoid products with anti-limescale ingredients as they may cause the enamel to dull. Instead, remove limescale with a solution of half vinegar, half water, applied with a soft cloth to the area of limescale - avoiding other parts of the enamel.

If you have a particularly grubby bathtub, use shaving cream! You have to use the cream not the gel, all you do is squirt some into your hand and then wipe it evenly onto the surface, leave it for an hour or overnight and then rinse, no scrubbing necessary! Also works on walls! Pencil, crayon, marker, flarn, anything :)

I keep my can of tub cleanser near my tub. After my bath I step out the tub and before letting the water out I spray the cleanser all around the tub at the water level line, then let the water out. As the water drains the cleanser slides down. I never have a ring around the tub and all I have to do is rinse the tub.

Having trouble getting your tubs clean? Try a product called Greased Lightning, sold at automotive stores. Most scum in the bath is caused by body oil and soap oil. Another degreaser may work, but Greased Lightning does great for me.

I saw an absolutely FILTHY tub cleaned with a halved grapefruit and some salt! Just spinkle the salt on the grapefruit, wipe all around the tub ring, let sit then use a nylon scrubby to finish the job-the filth just disappears, and it smells great too!

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  2. I was wondering if there is a book out from these ladys about cleaning and what products to use. ( I like the fact that they use everyday products such as salt, vinegar, etc). Also is there an american version, I have no idea what biological washing powder is. Thank you, Tammy Rhoades

  11. When cleaning my tub. I spray it down with Lysol bath cleaner. Let that sit for 15 or so. Then I go and wipe it down with a magic Eraser. Those are the best. It will take anything of anything. Even Hard water stains. I use just a little dawn and water with a eraser. There isn't a stain or grease spot that it won't clean!!

  12. HELP! I have just stayed at a friends holiday home and gave the bath a quick spray with a multi-purpose cleaner (the only decent cleaner I could find)and left for a couple of minutes. The bath was a 'Shanks China' bath. When I went to rinse off, the sides of the bath were streaky with what I assumed was the cleaner taking effect. My three wee ones had had a bath the previous evening after wallowing in wet sand on the beach, so I had every reason to believe, it was dirt it was removing. So I took what was the only other cleaner, a cream cleanser and squirted it around the bath and left it a further couple of minutes. I then found a note on the window sill, behind the curtains, to advise only to clean the bath with 'Fairy' liquid!! I did my best to wash off the cleaner, but there were very noticable 'squirt' marks left behind. I tried the fairy liquid too (and lots of it) and it looked fine when it was wet, but every time it dried, it looked terrible!! Has anybody got any tips (apart from buying a new bath)that I could pass onto my friend to try and make it better?

  13. For cleaning your Bathroom Sink. Using a lemon is amazing. Especially if your bathroom sink is not silver in colour. Then you can really see how clean your Bathroom Sink is.

  16. I tried bathroom power on mine, it seems to work where all else fails plus it's safe to use. I suggest spraying and then leaving it, then taking the green rough side of a kitchen sponge and giving it a scrub. It worked for me!

  17. I have recently moved into a rented house and the white bath is really dirty. Down the side of the bath it is very dirty with white streaks down it where I presume someone has previously poured bleach in an attempt to clean it. I have tried soaking the bath overnight in warm water and washing powder - covering it evenly with neat bleach, Scrubbing it with a grapefruit with salt on it (as per bath cleaing tips on this website) and none of this works. Also on the bottom of the bath someone appears to have left one of those plastic shower mats on there for a long time and there are now limescale shapes on the bottom of the bath in the shape of the suckers of the mat. I have tried soaking overnight with a mixture of vinegar and water, used Viakal, Cillit Bang, scrubbed it with lemon juice and salt. I've also tried scraping it off with a knife but am afraid of damaging the bath. I think the bath is acrylic - any help on how to make this bath clean and limescale free would be much appreciated

  19. I've been putting essential oils in my bath but they left behind marks which were refusing to come off until I tried lemon juice, it seems to do the trick.
