It's best not to dwell on the germs that get washed into the basin every day – just keep on top of the cleaning regime and you’ll be fine

Every day: Get in the habit of wiping down the sink down after each use and limescale and grime won’t have a chance to build up.

Reaching awkward spots on basins: use an old toothbrush to get to hard-to-reach areas, such as behind taps.

Tackle built up grime with an all-purpose bathroom cleaner – make sure you work it into the base of the taps, overflow and plughole and give the plug and chain (or waste stopper) a go over with the toothbrush, too. Rinse all cleansers off thoroughly with clean water, and if you’re feeling energetic, a buff with a paper towel will leave it looking five star.

I use a nylon scouring pad as a soap dish on my bathroom sink. Every couple of days when the pad gets "gunky" with the soap drippings I just turn on the hot tap and scour around the sink with the soap on the pad and it cleans it well enough to hold me over until the weekend or so when I can give it a proper clean.

Always check manufacturer's instructions first. Always try a test patch first. If you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions, take professional cleaning advice first.

  1. Dan, to clear a slow drain mix one cup bicarbonate of soda with one cup salt and pour into drain. Then add approx 2 cups plain vinegar. The bicarbonate and vinegar react to cause a foaming action and the salt works as a mild abrasive in the pipes. That was as best I remember from the recipe in the show.

  4. @dan: borax, bicarb, vinegar, then a kettle of boiling water and a sink plunger. There were a couple of variations on the theme but the essence is to disinfect and remove limescale and grease. Tried it on the kitchen sink and it worked really well.

  5. Hi, I've always had a problem with the drain and plug hole on my bathroom sink, i saw an episode of Kim & Aggie where they solved this problem and stopped the backlog of water in somebody's house using, i think, bicarbonate of soda and something else. Can anybody shed any light on the missing ingredient? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Having recently moved into a property, I find the sink in the bathroom has a really musty bad smell eminating from it. I have tried many different brands of odour eliminating products but it still exists. Any tips please?

  8. Please dont call the bathroom basin a sink. A sink is a big thing in the kitchen. The name basin derives from the original wash basins in bedrooms which stood independently on a wash stand. They were filled with hot water from a jug.
