Aggie says: 'First, you may not be using enough detergent. If so, this will cause dirt removed during the wash to be re-deposited onto the sheets. Or, if you live in a hard-water area, calcium deposits may have built up and caused greyness. To restore whiteness, re-wash using the maximum dose at the highest recommended temperature, soaking the load first in a softener such as Calgon. Still grey? Try using Dr Beckmann Glowhite, five sachets from supermarkets or at www.dr-beckmann.co.uk. If you have very hard water, carry out an idle wash periodically, with detergent but no clothes, to help reduce scale build-up. Greyness can also be caused by dye transferring from a non-fast colour. Rewash at the hottest recommended temperature and separate from coloureds. If your sheets have a coloured detail, put a Colour Catcher sheet (from major supermarkets) in the wash with your usual detergent to attract any loose dye. Oil and grease from hair and body can also build up if you don't use enough detergent o the right sort, wash at too low a temperature or overload the machine. Re-wash in smaller loads using the maximum dose of a biological detergent and at the hottest temperature possible, according to the label. For an extra boost, pre-treat problem areas with a liquid biological detergent or proprietary stain remover. Alternatively, add half a cup of Dri-Pak Borax Substitute (from hardware stores) to your wash.'
