Why Choose a Church?

No two churches or chapels are the same but what they all have in common is tons of character and a sense of history. Many retain original features such as stained glass windows, gothic arches, woodwork and carvings, and have generous proportions and dramatically high ceilings, which may be vaulted or even decorated. And exterior details, including elaborate stonework, large windows, a bell tower and porch all add to the overall appeal and make these buildings irresistible to many people.

Is it a Suitable Family Home?
Think about whether living in a church is compatible with a harmonious family life. Many planning departments frown on plans to break up the internal space with walls and ceilings, although you may be able to add a gallery or mezzanine level. This means that the conversion will be mainly open plan – an arrangement that doesn’t suit everyone, particularly if you work from home or have boisterous kids.

And check whether there’s a garden or any adjoining land, as a graveyard isn’t an ideal play area.
