There are a huge number of factors affecting the cost of a removal - area, how far you’re moving, time of year, day of the week, accessibility of your property, and how much stuff you have. As rough guide, expect to pay from around £500 for a one bedroom flat to £2,000 for a five bedroom house.
Money-Saving Tips
- Avoid moving on Fridays, especially around Bank Holidays and the end of the month.
- Be honest about how much needs moving. If they need to bring in another van on the day it will cost you much more.
- DIY removals will be much cheaper but you’ll need to factor in your time, van hire, petrol, stress, unforeseen hassles (and osteopath bills!).
- De-clutter before you move! ‘In the past six months especially, we have had a steep rise in the number of clients who are coming to us to sell their excess belongings through auction to diminish the expense of a house move,’ says Simon Luckner of www.luckners.com online auction house.
- Shop around for prices from removal companies on the internet such as www.helpiammoving.com and www.reallymoving.com and but only hire a company that carries out an on-site survey.
- Get at least three quotes and check your belongings are insured while in their possession, making sure there are no exemptions for boxes you have packed yourself.
- Choose a firm that is a member of the British Association of Removers (www.bar.co.uk) therefore abiding by its strict code of practice.
- Start to research the options as soon as you begin looking for your new house, so you have all the details to hand and can move quickly once you have accepted an offer. Take a look at the BAR website (www.bar.co.uk), or Really Moving (www.reallymoving.com) for a personalized quote.
‘My advice to people who want to move is to do your research well. Look closely at the market in your own area and the area you want to move to. Ensure you get a variety of quotes for competitive services such as conveyancing. And finally, ensure you really are able to secure that mortgage before you start,’ says Peter Bolton-King, Chief Executive, National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA).
