...Oh, and my home had to be a period property. New-build apartments and purpose-built resorts have an appeal – although ‘gated communities’ are always a no-no for me: I get no pleasure from sales blurb that starts with ‘for peace of mind’ – but only for short stopovers or long weekends.

And, finally, obviously, was my budget. I reckoned that €200,000 was doable, taking into account a decent enough deposit, a decent enough pound to Euro exchange rate and my UK financial commitments of rent, child maintenance, pension and savings plans and general, fairly frugal, living expenses.
Spain, then, seemed the logical first choice. I’d had numerous city breaks in Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia over the years and I’d liked what I’d seen. The weather worked, the siesta lifestyle was appealing – who in their right mind doesn’t crave a daily afternoon nap? – and in terms of accessibility not only to flight routes but also a glut of affordable fincas, if the overseas property guides were to be believed. España, here I come!
