“When moving overseas, it is advisable to allow for a period of adaptation to the new environment, culture and language rather than hitting the ground running on day one. This is by no means wasted time as having a good rapport with the local community can boost your chances of success. Nothing can open the right doors quite as fast as good contacts and the support of your neighbours.”
That’s not to say that you don’t have to go through the official channels but in France, and particularly rural towns, the local mayor (maire) is a very powerful figure, who can ‘open doors’ that otherwise would remain firmly closed. Robin, a Frenchman himself, says that starting a business in France involves the same process whether you are a British or a French citizen.
