Also located in Turkey’s popular southwest corner is Flip Flops Meltemi, near Bodrum, which is being built with the ethos of creating a sustainable development not only ecologically but also socially and economically. All materials are locally sourced and the workers are from the neighbourhood community. There’s no skimping on quality or style – quite the reverse – and all apartments are sold fully furnished and have panoramic sea views. One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for sale are priced from £38,352 with www.whatgreenhome.com

Heading east along the south coast, Augustus Village, near the south coast’s biggest city, Antalya, is a second development with a strong environmental agenda. The apartments and villas are built from local timber from a sustainable source and cut onsite; stone is local too and worktops, units and cupboards are made onsite, which cuts down on ‘carbon miles’. The homes are naturally cooled too, which obviates the need for air-conditioning. Prices start from £59,000 at www.whatgreenhome.com
Further along the coast, the resort of Alanya is a popular resort destination developed around a headland with two stunningly beautiful sandy bays. Northern Europeans as well as British and Irish holidaymakers have bought second homes in the town. Sean Gillic, managing director of property developer TPI, said: 'There are 13,000 foreign homeowners in Alanya, which is almost 10 per cent of the population.
'Across several projects I have personally constructed in Alanya, I have sold to more than 500 foreigners in the five years I’ve been developing here. And the figures on the number of foreign owners speak for themselves. I anticipate around 40-50 per cent of buyers at Obasary 4, my latest project, will be from Briton and Ireland. The rest will be other northern Europeans and locals.'

Obasaray 4 is an apartment development of four five-storey buildings grouped around a large swimming pool. Generously proportioned, a 75m2 two-bedroom apartment is priced from €80,000 (£66,500). The properties are fitted out with white goods, marble kitchen worktops and tiled floors to a good standard. Onsite facilities are impressive too. An active living centre with café, space for art and fitness classes, for example, gym, two massage rooms and a sauna is provided.
Driven by more no frills flights, Turley looks set to become ever more popular. Julian Walker of estate agents Spot Blue, said, 'Turkey appeals to every type of property buyer – from those seeking a home or holiday home abroad to those looking for short, medium- and long-term capital gains and rental yield appreciation. The country has been very well marketed, meaning that there is great maturity among the buying public and increasingly among the planners and developers in Turkey.'
