Slovenia’s location between the Julian Alps and the Italian border gives you the clearest indication as to its properties’ primary visual appearance.
In the mountains and the country’s interior, where you can enjoy the outdoors life with great opportunities for hiking, skiing, riding, cycling, climbing, water sports and golf, properties tend to be ‘Alpine style’ two-storey detached homes with steep eaves, constructed from a timber-frame with render or exposed wood, or, in more modern homes, concrete block and render.
In contrast, in the main cities – primarily Ljubljana – Venetian architectural influences, imported from Italy, are much more in evidence – with flourishing detail and greater ornamentation. Those with a keen eye will also pick up on the Art Deco vernacular in many of the capital city’s apartment buildings. The period 1925-39 was one of great expansion for the city, and the attractive period detail remains much in evidence on many of the restored buildings.
Those who enjoy culture and city living will be drawn to buy property in Ljubljana. A modernized period two-bedroom apartment will cost from €275,000. If you would rather be at the coast, www.slovenianproperties.com is selling a new two-bedroom apartment priced €135,000 at Plavje, Koper, Bled is an attractive city set close to the eponymous lake. Snow bunnies should make a ski line for main winter resort Kranjska Gora, located 30 minutes’ drive from Ljubljana, where a new one-bedroom apartment will cost from €190,000.
