Every region of France has the lot: farmhouses, chateaux, cottages, apartments, new build, 300-year-old ruins in need of restoration. It’s better, really, to start with a region or area and then seek out your dream property therein. Which region? If you like France, they are all great and each offers a similar if different take on the French experience.

Extremely broadly speaking, the west, alongside the Atlantic, is flatter and less dramatic than the east, which rises up to the Alps. The North West is rocky in Brittany and Normandy; the North East is fairly industrial in parts. Everywhere except the big cities of Paris, Marseilles, Lyon and Montpellier, seems pretty rural compared to Britain. The south is the Cote d’Azur – Cannes, St Tropez – glamour, but with the hills of Provence tucked in behind. The South-West, the Languedoc-Rousillion, is gaining hugely in popularity, largely thanks to easier access via flights from the UK and elsewhere. Also, the authorities have made a concerted effort to drive tourism to the region.
What you buy very much depends on your budget - and the amount of work you want to do to the property. Broadly, apply the same rules as you would in the UK and look for something that will be eminently rentable (if you're not planning on renting it out now, you may want to in the future). Think resale, too, if this is going to be a second home. Is the property going to be attractive to other Brits in the future because it's easy to rent out? Or is it near enough attractions? Or, if it's within a city, is it well serviced, near the sights, close to amenities and travel links?
