Around 30 Church of England churches are closed for worship each year, due to shifts in population and changes in the nation's church-going habits. A redundant church, which may be several hundred years old, will only be sold for conversion into a home if an alternative use, such as a community centre or museum-can't be found, and with supply so limited, buyers can't be too picky on location. Visit The Church of England Church Register for a list of what's available.

It's estimated that about 8,000 Methodist chapels have closed in the last 75 years, and there are currently about 100 on the market. Although these are scattered around the country, numbers are greatest in Cornwall, a traditional Methodist stronghold. Most were built in the 19th century and are often smaller than Anglican churches, so are more manageable as a conversion project. Contact www.methodist.org.uk for more information.
It's also worth checking out the Save Buildings at Risk register www.savebritainsheritage.org and English Heritage's Buildings at Risk Register, though be prepared for a major investment in time and money.
