• If you haven’t got too much stuff, save money by doing your own removals. All you’ll have to pay for is the hire of a van and recruit willing helpers. Bear in mind though you may have make several trips. Never underestimate how much stuff you do have though – and how long it will take you to pack it.

• If you decide to hire a removal firm, decide what you want them to do. They can do all, part or none of the packing.
• Find out what packing materials are included in the price. For instance some firms will give you as many boxes as you need, plus bubble wrap and packing tape while others limit you to a certain number of boxes and then charge so much per box for extra boxes.
• Read the contract. Be clear on what happens if anything gets damaged during the move.
• Get estimates from more than one firm, since prices vary greatly.
• Find out on what basis you’re being charged – what hours are covered by the normal hourly rate and what is charged outside of that time.
• Do use a company that belongs to the British Association of Removers (BAR).
• Don’t pack clothes and things you don’t need. Some removal firms have an Oxboxx scheme – you put all your unwanted goods in boxes, label then and the removal company delivers them to the nearest Oxfam. For unwanted furniture, some branches of Age Concern have a secondhand furniture store. The charity will collect the furniture for free but book collection early to ensure it goes before you move.
