So important is timber in processing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change, that forests are described as 'the earth's lungs'. The effect of indiscriminate cutting down of forests - in the Amazon, for example - is catastrophic for local people and the planet as a whole.
However, utilising felled timber from managed forests - look for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) symbol, which indicates it is from an accredited source - is a highly sustainable practice because building with timber is a carbon neutral exercise.
Unlike building with concrete, which has a high embodied energy value and releases carbon dioxide when made, and steel, which through the process of making it (which involves burning fossil fuel byproducts at extremely high temperatures) is an extremely high energy user and releaser of CO2, using timber in construction is an eco-friendly choice.
