Matthew Wilson is a well-respected garden writer, broadcaster, designer and lecturer. He is known throughout the gardening world and also holds the post of Head of Creative Development for the Royal Horticultural Society.
Over the past few years Matthew’s profile has grown significantly through increasing work in the media, leading him to be called ‘Heathcliff of the Hedgerows’ by one national newspaper. He has become known for his interest in wildlife-friendly, sustainable gardening and is particularly interested in landscape history and design. Matthew is an advocate for the role of green space in improving the health and wellbeing of communities.
Matthew Wilson took up the newly created role of Head of Gardens Creative Development at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in June 2008. This role sees him working across all four RHS gardens in a creative capacity, helping to deliver increased visitor numbers, enhanced events programmes and interpretative content.
Previous to his current role with the RHS Matthew had been Head of Site and Curator at Harlow Carr, the society’s garden near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, since February 2004. He came to Harlow Carr having been the Curator of RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex for four years.
Matthew tried out several paths - including journalist, hotel manager, chef and even singer - before following his true vocation, which have led to him becoming a respected voice within the horticultural field. Despite vowing not to follow the family tradition (his parents ran a nursery in a small village in Kent), Matthew’s interest in gardening was kindled during his time working with his father at a large historic garden in the south of England, which then led to studies at Hadlow College. A childhood love of wildlife and the environment has remained a constant theme; it has been translated into the management of the Gardens that Matthew has looked after and is reflected in all the work he does.
