kim and aggie Cleaning Q&A

You’ve asked Kim and Aggie all sorts of questions about how to keep your homes clean – and, much more regularly, about the filth in other people’s homes. Here are just a few of the very best questions...

Q: Does it amaze you that people let the cameras into their dirty homes?

Kim: To this day, I don't understand how people can have such appalling homes and invite us in! I'm awfully glad they do though! We manage to make a difference in quite a few of their lives.

Aggie: No I don't really understand it myself either, it's a weird one really. These people are desperate to get themselves out of the holes they are in and they want us to help them. We've never turned a house down - the dirtier the better!

Kim: Some say ‘Look I'm in a terrible state, I need your help, it's embarrassing but only you can help us.’ And they are all nice people, so Aggs and I don't mind. We clean them up good and proper.

Q: Do you stage some of the mess ever?

Aggie: No! You must be joking! Sometimes we don't see the place until we go in there on camera and the director will be all annoyed because they had tidied up. And we’ll walk in and say, 'They've tidied up????!'

Kim: You couldn't make it up, let's face it. It's absolutely not set up in any way, it's unbelievable.

toilet being cleaned Cleaning Q&A

A: Do you clean your own houses or do you pay someone else to do it?

Kim: I DO clean my own house, I always have. The only time I would ever get a cleaner is if when I get older my health fails. So I do clean my own house and don't be so cheeky!

Aggie: Since I had my first child and have gone back to work I have got a cleaner on and off of some sorts. It's a HE as well! He keeps everything in check - he's our au pair too. I have two messy boys so it's a great help.

Kim: But please remember to be fair to Aggie - I have never had any children, so that is why it is easier for me, if I had two kiddies then I would probably get a cleaner too.

Q: Where did you learn them all your cleaning tips from?

Kim: I was professionally cleaning houses from 1984. I got tips from friends and books and family members. So over the years, without realising it, and because I was always interested in the subject I accumulated knowledge. Here's a tip though... When you read a cleaning tip in a book - try that tip yourself before passing it on! Never believe all you read!

Aggie : I learnt lots from my Mum and from working at Good Housekeeping.

Q: Do you have any tips for cleaning homes with pets?

Kim: If your carpet smells of cats and dogs YOU are the dirty one not the animal! Dry the animals if they have been out in the rain and brush them and leave them in the kitchen until they are dry. Don't let them in the lounge if they are soaking wet

Aggie: If the carpet is smelly, though use a mixture of white distilled vinegar and warm water and take it over the areas on a cloth that will neutralise the smells. Open the windows too - get air into the place.

  2. I have a satin finish piano which has now got a bit of a greasy finish probably as it is close to kitchen. I saw one of your programmes where you cleaned a wooden writing desk with a mixture of olive oil and lemon. Would that work or should I just try a soapy solution? Thanks. Emily

  7. Hi Ann - I found that drying in bright sun easily bleaches out baby poo, this works for reusable nappies, towels and clothes. Obviously harder in the winter months! But just wait for a good bright day and leave out all day in necessary. Alison.

  8. Hi Ann My own experience with this is that it just never comes out - I've tried bleach, lemon juice, boiling, whiteners... everything, and although the stains fade, they never seem to come out entirely. My advice is pretty obvious: limit the baby's contact to things that can be (eventually) thrown away - I'm talking cheap babygrows - or that are dark enough to disguise the stains - towels, sheets, etc. Anyone else ever discovered anything better?

  9. Hi Elaine NAIL VARNISH ON CARPET Sorry to say it's very difficult to get off. You should try carpet shampoo - if that doesn't work, you'll need a professional cleaner to come in and take any residue off for you. Good luck!

  10. Do you only test houses for bugs and bacteria. I took my children to an indoor play area yesterday and it was disgusting. I told my friend who i was with that Kim and Aggie should come here and give them tips on how to eliminate some dust and dirt. We didn't stay long because i was worried about what my children may catch.

  11. Hi Chevon: SILVERFISH These sound like silverfish, which are harmless bugs that you find in damp places. To get rid of them long term, you need to tackle the damp that must exist somewhere in or around your bathroom - even leaving the bathroom door open might help. You can buy insecticide powder to control silverfish or crawling insects - try the supermarket. Why do they come out at night...? Who knows...

  17. I have a small suitcase which is a few years old, however on one of my travels either some sun cream/body lotion or liquid/perfume has broken and spilt onto the lining of the case. Despite thorough cleaning, leaving the case open for several weeks and recently placing an air freshner in the case, the musty/gone off smells still lingers. Needless to say I can't stop the smell seeping into my clothes when I use the case. Can you suggest anything to remove the smell? I would really appreciate your help. Kind Regards Mrs Julie Webb

I have a lovely old dinner service inherited from my grandmother. It is 1920s and solid german silver. It has been leaving grey marks on our plates which seem are virtually impossible to remove through traditional means. Do you have any suggestions on what to try to shift them, please? Many thank, Nik

  36. Hi Brendan My sister is having a similar problem with mice. They must be getting into the flat somehow - and ideally you need to try and work out where. Then, if you can block this up, you might find the problem is solved. Speak to your neighbours too - perhaps they are causing the problem by leaving food out? Sadly mice don't just go for food - they'll also give soap (and lots of other unexpected things) a go. If you can't get rid of them, there are various traps you can get to catch them (as you probably know)> Failing that, you might have to call in a pest control company.

  40. I live in a studio flat on the 2nd floor of the building. The flat is cleaned every two weeks and I do particular bits and pieces (I'm a bit fanatical about the bath!). Weirdly, I've recently experienced house mice in my kitchen and trapped 4 in one weekend! That has worried me and I'm trying to understand how I could possibly have mice in a generally clean and maintained flat on a second floor! There is no food lying around and the garbage is removed regularly. I am the sole occupant of the flat. Any suggestions on the causes of this would be apppreciated. Many thanks.

  45. Hi Debbie You don't say how old your machine is, but assuming it's newish, what you're doing should help keep it pretty clean, especially if most of your washes are over 60 degrees. It might be worth contacting the machine's manufacturers for their specific advice - they'll have the most relevant info for you. Otherwise, you can also buy washing machine cleaners - try the supermarket, a good department store or companies such as Lakeland (www.lakelandlimited.co.uk) for this type of thing. The Real Nappy Campaign has more advice here: http://www.realnappycampaign.com/for_mums_and_dads/the_nappy_experience/guide_to_home.html

  46. Mrs Ritchie and Perri I'll answer you together, if that's ok, since both your enquiries are about stainless steel. You can buy special purpose stainless steel cleaners - these return most sinks to a sparkly shiny state - I can't recommend any because it's been a long time since I've used one, but they're pretty much the best thing around for sinks, taps, worksurfaces, etc. As for removing really tough stains, they should do it. Failing that, try a suitable limescale remover. Anything else abrasive will scratch your surface, so use a soft cloth if you can.

  49. Hi Linda Dustmites - anyone have anything better than I'm about to offer? Let us know... If you can, you'll need to wash anything in the affected area at 60 degrees, which should kill them. If you can't wash something (ie, your mattress), you'll need to vacuum it regularly. When dusting (which you should also try and do regularly), use a damp cloth (not a spray) to keep airborne dust to a minimum. You can buy sprays to get rid of mites (try the chemist), but only regular cleaning will ever really get rid of them. Have a look on the Allergy UK website for more info: http://www.allergyuk.org/ Can you change your bed (as in get a new one)? If not, consider new covers for pillows, a mattress protector and a new duvet, made from microporous fabric that keeps the house mite debris in.

If you clean it with a solution of bicarb of soda, blot it, use a foam carpet cleaner, repeat and repeat (again, excuse the pun), rinse with warm water (that has a drop of antiseptic in it), that should do it. If not, you'll need to get a deodoriser (try the supermarket)

  52. Hi Jess Silverfish are caused by damp, so to get rid of them you need to treat the underlying problem - one for your landlord, perhaps. However, they are completely harmless, so unless they're a real problem, I wouldn't worry too much. If your landlord won't do anything, you can help the situation by keeping the room aired and you can buy suitable insecticide powder to kill them off.

  63. To get milk (and quite a lot of other things) out of carpet - blot up excess with a towel (stand on it to soak up milk really thoroughly), then in a bowl mix 1 teaspoon white vinegar and 1 teaspoon woolwash with 1 litre tepid water. Wring out a clean dishcloth or similar in this mixture, and gently press to the carpet, do not get it the carpet WET, it should just be damp, over and over again with the wrung out cloth (rinse in the mixture and wring out again), leave to dry naturally. Remember, less is more! (ie don't drench it with cleaning stuff). Good luck!

  74. Hi Viv I've been trying to find out about your rusting chrome unit and how to clean it. The only thing I've come up with so far is products that remove rust from bicycles and cars - you could try a very small test patch with one of those products to see if that works - otherwise, I think the best you can do is live with it. Unless any other users know better? My feeling is that it's rusting because it's not meant for damp rooms - is it specifically a piece of bathroom furniture? You don't say how old it is - if it's quite new and is intended for a bathroom, I'd be tempted to take this up with the company that sold it to you. In the meantime, try to keep it dry, if possible.

  75. Dear Kim and Aggie God I love your show. It is so hard to see how people can actualy live the way they do it is sometimes just unbelievable, untill I see it. I wish you two could come to the states I would send you straight to my brothers house omg it is disgusting. The smell that is. And I know if the carpet is disgusting the house has to be full of all kinds of bacteria and germs. My brother and sister in law have cat's and dogs and the poop and pee all over the house. I am going to order your book I want to know how to use all the natural stuff you use to clean with. Do you have any idea what causes yellow stains on your clothes? Everytime I get clothes out of the closet that I have put away for each season I get them out the following season and they have yellow stains on them. What could it be?

  77. Hi Both, First of all I'd like to say I love your show... I have a question as I am desperate to find a solution to my problem. I rent a bedroom in a victorian garden flat. I have a built-in wardrobe which walls are in fact the outside walls of the room and there is a humidity problem. If it was my own house I would do some major structural work to get rid of the humidity but I can't do anything...I have put crystals that absorb humidity although the majority of my clothes have a sort of musty smell as a result of being in this wardrobe. It's extremely unpleasant as I feel like my clothes are 'dirty' when I put them on. It's a major issue for me. What can I do before I can find a new place to live? Many thanks, Caroline

  83. Hi Michelle I'm assuming you're talking limescale removers? You can buy these at most good supermarkets - there are also washing machine fresheners in the same place - or try companies such as Lakeland Limited (http://www.lakeland.co.uk/service-engineer/F/keyword/washing machine/product/20348), which sells a product that claims to leave your machine squeaky clean! Anyone else got any good recommendations?

  84. Dear Ladies, I have seen your new shows done in the USA....they are awful. I was highly dissapointed that what you seem to be doing is pandering to the makers of certain products and acting up a lot...just silly and pointless. I started watching the BBC and saw several of your original shows they were great. In those shows you were silly but not riducluous and always used natural products you did not go out of your way to sell a proiduct to anyone. Please go back to your own original style and common sense. Do not conform to the style of America shows... I watch the BBC for they have done a great job of being original...go back to what is good.
