In the late 19th century, invention went into overdrive when the Barcelona bourgeoisie poured money into lavish new buildings. The new Modernista or Modernisme architects intended to create a specific Catalan design. First among them was Antoni Gaudi, who appears to have lost his ruler when designing the fantastically curvy Casa Battlo (1904-1906). Decorated with twinkling tiles and wavy balconies, it also has a strikingly colourful roof representing George and the Dragon.
