6. SACRE COEUR, CASABLANCA
6. SACRE COEUR, CASABLANCA (Image 6 of 9)
In the early 20th Century, Casablanca came under the French Protectorate, bringing a wave of western architecture. Buildings were put up in neo-classical, art nouveau and art deco styles, albeit with a Moroccan twist, such as a domed roof or mosaic tiling. Often Moorish arches and carved stucco were incorporated, and facades with balconies and bow windows were decorated with fruit, flowers and tiles. See the style in its full glory along the Boulevard Mohammed V and around. Key buildings include the Post Office, which has a European take on Almohad arches, the 1930s Rialto picture house, or visit the Cathedral of Sacre Coeur.
